Surfboard and Wetsuit Rentals: A Quick Guide

Group of surfers in yellow shirts gather near surfboards at a beachside shack.

If you are learning to surf or already feel at ease in the waves, renting equipment is a great way to continue practicing without having to invest in your own board and wetsuit. But do you know when’s the best time to rent equipment, and when it makes more sense to opt for a class with an instructor? Let’s explain everything!

When to Rent Material and When to Do a Class

The best time to rent a board and wetsuit is when you already have some idea of the basics of surfing: paddling, catching waves alone and taking-off (standing up on the board) with some consistency. At this stage, it is very useful to alternate between classes with an instructor and autonomous sessions – that is, rent the equipment and go on your own.

In the lessons, you will consolidate the technique and receive personalized corrections; As for the autonomous sessions, you will practice your autonomy at sea, gain confidence and apply what you have learned. This combination is the secret to a faster and safer evolution.

Assessing Sea Conditions: An Essential Step

Before you decide whether to rent material or take a lesson, it is essential to evaluate the conditions of the sea. Days with smaller waves are ideal for practicing alone, while more challenging conditions (large waves, strong wind and currents) make the presence of an instructor essential.

At our school, we are always available to help you choose the best option for your level and safety – the sea changes every day, and it is important to adapt the plan.

Rental Duration: 2 Hours Productive Surf

We offer 2-hour rentals only – and there’s a good reason for that. This is the ideal time for a productive and fun session, without overloading the body. Longer sessions increase the risk of fatigue and injury, especially for those in the early stages of learning. Two hours are perfect to warm up, catch good waves and finish the session with positive energy!

Types of Boards Available

We have a variety of boards for all levels of surfers:

Foam boards (Softboards) – Ideal for beginners. The size 8’0 with plenty of volume is perfect for those who are starting out and want to catch as many waves as possible. But we also have smaller sizes for those who are already learning to cut the wave, like 7’6 or 7’0 for example.

Epoxy boards – Lighter, faster and more responsive. We have options from 7’2 to 5’11, suitable for intermediate and advanced surfers.

In general, beginners should opt for larger boards, such as 8’0 or 7’6, with plenty of volume, because these facilitate balance and paddling, making the learning process easier and safer. Intermediate surfers can try medium boards, between 7’0 and 6’6, which allow them to start exploring simple maneuvers and gain more control over the board. And finally, for advanced surfers shorter boards are more suitable, between 6’0 and 5’11, which offer more agility and performance in maneuvers.

Choose the right material for your level, respect the optimal time of practice and always pay attention to sea conditions. After all, surfing is about balance – between technique and fun, between safety and freedom. And we are here to help you find yours.
